what does it really mean??

i came across a new interpretation just recently.
because of a foresaken love, one choses to forget/avoid love entirely.
for a tree that has rotten, decomposed, forgotten,.... one chooses to desert the entire forest entirely. is it the same as the chnese saying that goes.. once bitten by a snake, always scared of the rope (direct translation)
